You Can Spend the Night in a Vineyard at This Charming Paso Robles Hotel

Paso Robles is one of my favorite destinations for a weekend getaway in California, in large part because of its stellar wine scene and range of amazing hotels. One property that beautifully merges both is Geneseo Inn by Cass Winery. The eight rooms at this bed and breakfast are surrounded by vineyards, making for a unique and peaceful retreat. Here’s a full review of what it was like staying there on a recent getaway.

A Vineyard Hotel on a Stunning 145-Acre Winery

Opened by Cass Winery owners Steve Cass and Ted Plemons in 2020, the hotel experience is (unsurprisingly and delightfully) centered around wine. Guests can walk to the winery’s tasting room just down the hill for samples of their estate-grown Rhône varietals—best enjoyed outdoors on their scenic patio with one of their wood-fired pizzas from the cafe. Both the tasting room and cafe are open 7 days per week.

Hotel guests also get access to a complimentary wine hour each evening, along with plenty of space to sit, play lawn games, or simply wander through the vineyards just a few dozen feet away.

In fact, this was probably the most standout part of the property for me: it’s beautiful in a quintessential California wine-country kind of way. You’re close to the vines at every turn—whether sitting on your private patio or lounging in one of their hammocks—and the vineyard backdrop is a stunning contrast to the hotel’s modern, industrial architecture.

Eco-Friendly, Design-Forward Rooms With Private Balconies

Created in partnership by architect Walter Scott Perry of Ecotech Design and Crate Modular, the hotel makes use of recycled shipping containers to form its industrial-modern buildings. While this material choice is obvious from the outside (though well integrated into the landscape), once in the room, it’s easy to forget you’re standing in what used to be a shipping container.

The rooms are bright, airy, and spacious, with a super comfortable king bed at the center and multiple seating areas for relaxing. Each room also comes with thoughtful amenities like comfy slippers, plush robes, an espresso maker, and a private, dedicated parking spot located directly below each room.

But my favorite part? The private balcony overlooking the vineyards, complete with a seating area for enjoying breakfast en plein air on warm mornings (which are plentiful in Paso Robles) or a glass of wine in the evening. Each container is elevated to provide panoramic views of the vines and rolling hills beyond, maximizing the scenery beautifully.

Keep an eye out for subtle nods to the hotel’s artistic theme as well. Each room is named after a retro song or movie, with decorative references throughout (like a motorcycle outside Easy Rider), and bespoke decor that gives them their own vibes. We stayed in Bohemian Rhapsody and have to say, it was a fun touch to have the song playing on our in-room speakers on arrival.

A Quiet Location on the Outskirts of Town

We loved the quiet, vineyard location of this hotel but it did mean we were about a 15-minute drive from most restaurants, wine tastings, and activities we wanted to experience, as well as downtown Paso Robles. While the hotel’s rural location wasn’t a deal breaker for me (and is likely a perk for many), it’s something to keep in mind when planning your days.

Breakfasts Included in Every Stay

Dutch baby and eggs Benedict at Geneseo Inn

Eggs benedict + dutch baby

Geneseo Inn’s delicious breakfasts more than make up for the lack of nearby cafés and restaurants. Each morning, guests can choose from a menu of homemade breakfast dishes—the dutch baby with seasonal fruit was a personal favorite—which are delivered fresh to your room alongside fruit and coffee or tea. Fair warning: the portions are generous, but I’m not complaining.

Experiences + Extras

As you’ve probably gathered by now, Geneseo Inn is more than just a place to sleep. In addition to the on-site tasting room and nightly wine hour, the property offers a program called Camp Cass. “Think of it as an adult summer camp,” one staff member told me. Through it, guests can book experiences like vineyard tours, wine seminars, beekeeping, horseback riding, and more.

Overall + Price

A night here will cost around $330 - $400 per night, depending on time of year and week—a rate that was well worth the experience. You’re getting a private, relaxing stay in the middle of a working vineyard. Staff are welcoming and helpful. Rooms are spacious and comfortable and delicious, generously-portioned breakfasts are included in every stay. It’s also a truly unique experience—and one that will likely be a highlight of any Paso Robles trip.

It’s hard to name any downsides to our stay but if there’s any that might be a deterrent, it’s the location. It’s about 15 minutes outside of town, and many popular wineries are located on the opposite side of Highway 101, adding a bit of extra driving to your days. As long as you plan accordingly, it’s not an issue and I thought it was a fair exchange for the quiet beauty of the space.

Overall, I’d recommend Geneseo Inn as a special place to stay in Paso Robles—especially if you’re planning a romantic getaway, wine-focused trip, or milestone celebration. It’s dog-friendly too, so yes: bring the pup and let them frolic among the vines.
