Dawn Ranch Review: A Stylish, Riverside Retreat That’s Perfect for Group Getaways
Book now: Hotel Website | Booking.com | Expedia | Hotels.com
Nestled right along the Russian River, Guerneville is one of my favorite small towns for a weekend escape in California, especially in the summer. For years, I’ve been going up for weekends with friends, typically renting an Airbnb as close to the river as we could find—that is, until 2022 when Dawn Ranch, which has had many lives over the past century, reopened as a chic hotel. I love the design of the 86, freshly renovated cabins, but my favorite part might just be the location and amenities. You’re a short walk from town, have direct, private access to the Russian River, and there’s an on-site bar and restaurant.

Who’s the hotel for?
Everyone! Dawn Ranch is nice for everyone, but I especially love it for groups and families looking for a chic, nature-inspired retreat with lots of activities like kayaking and lawn games, along with great food, live music, and a spa—plus direct river access and a quick walk to town.
Cons
The price can vary a lot, depending on what time of year/week you book, and which cabin you select.
Cabins also vary a bit in size and quality. The roadside cabins are the cheapest but, as the name suggests, you’re right next to the road.
No kitchens / kitchenettes, but most cabins have mini-fridges and a hot water kettle. If you want to cook any meals, there is a shared BBQ area, though.
Pros
Private dock and direct access to the Russian River, with free kayaks and inner tubes for guests to use.
A quick walk to downtown Guerneville.
Excellent restaurant and bar on-site.
Full service spa and pool.
Stylish, comfortable, and fully updated cabins in a peaceful, nature-centric area.
Property and location
This hotel is centrally located, just a few minutes walk from Guerneville’s main street. It’s also right on the river, giving guests the best of both worlds: easy access to daytime, summery fun as well as fun bars, restaurants, and even a bit of nightlife. Some of my favorite places to eat in town include:
Piknik Town Market: Coffee, sandwiches, biscuits, and grocery
Nimble & Finn’s Ice Cream: Ice cream in the former bank
Boon Eat + Drink: Fresh, seasonal dinners.
El Barrio: Mezcal and tequila cocktail bar. Snacks only, no dinner.
Trillium Winebar & Taproom: New wine bar and dinner spot.
Spa, restaurant, and amenities
The hotel’s on-site restaurant, The Lodge at Dawn Ranch, serves one of the better meals in Guerneville. Featuring fresh, seasonal dishes with a South American flair (don’t skip the Brazilian pao de quiejo—a cheesy pastry—at breakfast), and a lovely patio among the redwoods, it’s a delightful place to grab breakfast, dinner, or a sunset drink.
But the main perk of staying here is all the fun, summer-camp-esque activities you get access to as a guest: campfires with s’mores, lawn games, free kayak and inner tube rentals, river access, a pool, and a barbeque area.
The spa, which is located in a historic building that was once home to the former owners, is another highlight of the property. It’s also one of the main reasons I’d still recommend a stay here outside of the peak summer season. Their signature redwood bath is an outdoor bath among the redwoods, and delightful once the temperatures drop—especially if you pair it with the sauna and a massage.
What cabin should you book?
We stayed at Dawn Ranch on two separate occasions. The first time, my husband and I stayed in their Creekside One Bedroom Cottage, and the second time we booked the less expensive, Roadside Cabin during a busy summer weekend when rates were unusually high. Although both are stylish, clean, and have comfortable beds, the Creekside One Bedroom cottage was a much better experience than the roadside cabin. It was quieter, more spacious (we even had our own private porch underneath a redwood tree), and darker.
During that same trip, several friends rented their new tent options, a safari-style, glamping tent with a shared bathroom for all glampers. Although a bit less luxurious than the cabins, their accommodations were on a much quieter part of the property and they still had access to all the same property amenities as we did. Honestly, if I were on a tight budget, I’d probably select the tent over the roadside cabin next time. Otherwise, it’s worth splurging for an upgrade.
Note that Dawn Ranch has some of their accommodations across the street from the main restaurant and property (this is where the pool is located). These are The Grove lodging options. I personally would prefer to stay on the other side, if given the choice.
In terms of cost, quietness, and location on the property, I’d recommend booking a Sycamore or Redwood Cabin or any of the Chalets. All are in a quiet area of the property but near the restaurant and river access and right in the middle in terms of price.
Overall: Is Dawn Ranch worth it?
Yes! The location is great, it has tons of fun amenities, and one of the best meals in Guerneville. Just choose your cabin smartly and try to book during less busy periods to save on costs. It was a delightful stay for a couple’s getaway, but even better with a big group of friends—everyone gets to stay in the same place, but have their own separate areas to retreat to at the end of the night. Perfect.
