6 Beautiful Boutique Hotels to Book in Healdsburg, California
This small Sonoma town is a heavy-hitter with the hotels. Here are the best ones.
Harmon Guest House
Healdsburg is one of my favorite places for a weekend getaway—in no small part thanks to all of the amazing hotels in the area (I absolutely love a great hotel—especially if it’s small, charming, and captures the essence of the destination we’re in). Yes of course it has amazing food, wineries, and beautiful scenery too but these hotels really make the experience. After years of visiting, I’ve had a chance to stay at or at least tour each and every one of these hotels (no armchair journalism here). From a maximalist mansion you may never want to leave to an eco-friendly, design-forward property in a walkable corner of Healdsburg’s downtown, here are the hotels I’d most recommend on a trip to Healdsburg, California.

The first time I stayed at the 39-room boutique hotel, Harmon Guest House, I remember walking into our room and feeling an immediate sense of calm, tranquility and ease. Although it’s located right off Healdsburg’s main plaza—making it a convenient and walkable location—the rooms themselves feel like they’re tucked away somewhere much quieter. We checked into the Harmon King, which was a spacious, studio-style room. It even had a little nook for coffee in the mornings and a small balcony we enjoyed sitting on in the evenings.
On property, Harmon House has a rooftop bar (one of the few in town) and a pool. To be totally honest, I didn’t love how close the pool was to the parking garage but since guests are allowed to use the pool at their sister property, H2, which is right next door and connected by a discreet path behind the property, that wasn’t a dealbreaker. Overall, it’s one of my favorites in the area for its quality, service, amenities, and location.

Although I have yet to stay the night at H2, I have spent time touring the space and I’d very much recommend it as a place to stay in Healdsburg. As Harmon House’s sister property next door, there’s a lot that’s similar: guests of both properties have access to both pools and breakfast for both properties is served in H2’s ground-floor restaurant. The location is still excellent and walkable, with a park running behind the property which adds to the peaceful atmosphere.
Prices are also comparable and the main difference really comes down to design and aesthetic. Whereas Harmon House has a breezy, biophilic vibe, H2’s interiors are more mid-century modern. Some rooms have balconies and their suites feature a spacious plunge tub.
The Madrona
A maximalist mansion with a dreamy pool and excellent cocktails—best enjoyed on their porch on a summer day.

I am absolutely obsessed with The Madrona, a 24-room, adults-only boutique hotel in a renovated mansion just one mile outside of town. Room rates often top $800 per night, so it’s definitely a splurge—but one I was happy to pay for a special birthday getaway for Jon + me recently. We were able to take advantage of lower room rates by going mid-week and using one of their promos, and ended up paying $650 per night for a cottage on the edge of the property.
Our stay was truly delightful. The rooms are spacious, cozy, and we had no shortage of places to lounge. I loved the plush robes and the bathtub that looked out onto the fireplace—perfect for cooler Sonoma evenings. All stays include breakfast, and guests and non-guests alike can spend the evening dining at their on-site restaurant. I personally love coming for happy hour cocktails on their breezy porch.
The playful, maximalist design—modern yet a homage to its 19th-century heritage—is one of the most unique aspects of the property. Each room has its own unique design and personality, and guests can choose between one of the standard rooms in the historic mansion or one of their standalone cottages scattered among the grounds. There is also a lovely pool surrounded by flower-filled gardens, and their concierges are some of the best in the business.
All in all, if you’re looking for a unique, romantic retreat, this would be my first recommendation.

Montage Healdsburg
A luxurious, secluded resort among the vineyards just a short drive outside of town.

The only true resort in Healdsburg (for now), Montage is a luxurious getaway on a sprawling, 258-acre property dotted with vineyards and oak trees, about a mile outside of town. Although downtown Healdsburg and many of the area’s best wineries are just a short drive away, the hotel itself feels like its own little world. It’s secluded, tranquil, and designed to pamper.
I loved the treehouse-style rooms, each of which has a private, outdoor deck and seating area (my favorite spot to have coffee in the morning). The on-site restaurant Hazel hill is a lovely spot for sunset drinks and dinner (open to non-guests as well) and sometimes has live music. During the day, take advantage of the hotel’s pool, complete with food and drink service, e-bikes you can ride to town, or concierge service to help you explore the area.

27 North (formerly Hotel Les Mars)
A luxe, classically beautiful and centrally located hotel.

27 North is a sleeper hit, in my opinion—and photos really don’t do it justice. It’s luxurious in a classic, sophisticated way. Formerly known as Hotel Les Mars, the property underwent a rebrand on July 1, 2025. I last stayed here in 2023, prior to the rebrand but had a lovely time.
Each of the 6 guestrooms are spacious and quiet, and the beds are very comfortable. Marble bathrooms and plush robes add a hint of elegance, while the fireplace in our room was much appreciated on a cool spring evening. The staff was very helpful in arranging dinner reservations as well. The hotel also has an onsite, Mexican bar and restaurant, Arandas, but given its downtown location right off the Plaza, guests also have many more of Healdsburg’s most notable dining establishments right within walking distance.
And if you happen to be here on a Saturday, great news: 27 North overlooks the farmer’s market, making for a delightful morning start.

Appellation: coming soon!
A culinary-first hotel slated to open in fall 2025.

Charlie Palmer’s culinary-forward, luxury hotel, Appellation Healdsburg, is one of the most anticipated openings in Sonoma County, slated to debut in fall 2025. I was able to tour the property while it was still under construction and view a few demo rooms—and I have to say, the hype seems well deserved. The property is located just a bit outside of downtown Healdsburg and will be connected to the nearby Montage resort via a short trail (perfect for guests who want to walk somewhere else for dinner).
Rooms are very thoughtfully designed—not only are they beautiful and inspired by the surrounding area, but I found them to be very functional as well. Small details stood out during my hard hat tour, like ample storage and showers designed so you can turn them on without getting wet (the handle and shower head are on opposite ends).
But one of the biggest reasons to book a stay here (once reservations open) is the culinary programming. As a culinary-first hotel, Appellation includes a signature Charlie Palmer restaurant and bar, interactive cooking experiences, and guest floor pantries stocked with local artisan products and curated cookbook libraries—all designed to immerse guests in the region’s food culture.
The team also has a property already open in Lodi as well.

These hotels are so expensive for my dates. Help!
One of the most frustrating parts about planning a trip to Sonoma (or anywhere in Northern California, for that matter) is how expensive the hotels can be—especially on weekends or during the peak travel months in the summer. If these hotels are out of budget, I’ll usually look at Hotel Trio, a solid Marriott property a few minutes drive from Healdsburg’s main plaza. Wildhaven also comes up as an affordable, glamping option. IMO, it’s just fine. The tents are very close together and close to the road, so it’s not very quite or cozy, but if you just need a cheap place to crash for a night it’ll do the job.
I haven’t stayed at The Ruse yet either, but it often comes up as an affordable option that’s pretty close to town. Reviews are good and I’ve considered staying there several times.
And of course, you can always try your luck with an Airbnb or VRBO in the area. If you’re willing to stay a bit outside of town, like in Windsor or Geyserville, you can sometimes find some more affordable vacation rentals. Personally, I’d still pay a little more to be in town (I love the walkability of Healdsburg!) but understand that’s not always an option for every traveler or every trip.
