Unique travel ideas in California, every other week.

Hello hello Subscriber First Name! It’s Jessie B., your well-traveled friend, bringing you yet another round-up of unique and off-the-beaten-path travel ideas in California—plus some of my favorite travel gear I’ve been quietly testing behind the scenes this winter.

SAN FRANCISCO

New Taqueria Opens Near Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco’s Presidio Neighborhood

… And they’re giving free tacos to their first 100 customers next Tuesday, March 25 (they open at 11:30am). The place is called Taqueria Colibri and it’s by the same owners of / in the same space as Mexican bistro Colibri, a Presidio mainstay since 2005.

It’s the latest addition to the growing food scene near one of San Francisco’s coolest new parks: The Presidio Tunnel Tops. I love it because it’s big, clean, and has some of the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Over the past couple of years, a lot of great eateries have opened in the area (Dalida, Il Parco, and a rotating lineup of food trucks), making it easier to turn a visit to the Golden Gate Bridge into a full afternoon—complete with great food and picnic spots.

TRAVEL GEAR

As a Frequent Traveler, I’m Obsessed with Merino Wool—Here are Some of My New Favorite Items Made from This Magic, Travel-Friendly Fabric

I've spent years testing travel gear and clothing, and when it comes to travel-friendly fabrics, few compare to merino wool. It's odor-resistant, wrinkle-resistant, sweat-wicking, temperature-regulating, and—contrary to some assumptions—not itchy like other types of wool.

While many are familiar with Smartwool's excellent products, I recently had the opportunity to test some remarkable offerings from smaller brands using Australian wool certified by The Woolmark Company. Here are some of my favorites:

Minus33: I tested their base layers, and they’re super soft, warm, and—after two months of wear—still look like new.

Discount Code: Use code "JessieB" for 10% off Minus33.

ONDO: Jon refuses to wear any sock that isn't merino wool, and I get it—they're way less stinky. For a less sporty option, I’ve been loving ONDO’s no-slip socks. Great headbands too.

Discount Code: Use code "JESSIEB15" for 15% off ONDO.

Woolly: This Seattle-based brand has been on my radar for a while. I've been wearing their white cami non-stop; while the white is slightly see-through, I'd feel comfortable wearing a darker color on its own.

GUERNEVILLE

Guerneville is Getting a Swim Club + Camp Resort Just in Time for Summer

Guerneville is one of my favorite places in California in the summertime. Since visiting almost 11 years ago, I've seen a lot of exciting openings in this small Russian River town—Stavrand, Dawn Ranch, The Highlands, and now The River Electric, a brand-new swim club and camp resort opening just in time for summer.

It’s set on 12 acres of redwoods and meadows just a short walk from town. The property includes stylish furnished tents where you can stay the night, plus a pool area complete with pool bar and a restaurant. Stay the night or just grab a day pass for the swim club, starting at $32.

Reservations opened this past Monday, March 15, with a grand debut on Memorial Day weekend. Will I see you there?
