Two off-the-beaten path travel ideas every other Monday(ish).

It’s Jessie B, bringing you two of my top off-the-beaten-path travel ideas right now. I’m a little late this week because Jon and I just spent the last 10 days bikepacking across Vancouver Island (more on that on the blog soon!) and are finally back online while hanging out in the surf town of Tofino. As always, I’m sharing one last-minute travel idea on the west coast and one to plan for later in the year. Let’s get to it!

WHERE TO TRAVEL NOW

Mendocino Coast, California

Various dates in July

I bet many of you could use a coolcation right about now, amiright? If so, head to the Mendocino Coast, one of the most beautiful and iconic parts of California. But, since it’s a ~3 hour drive north of San Francisco (and not part of the Pacific Coast Highway), most out-of-state visitors don’t make it here. Too bad, because it has a lot to offer: nature, charming small towns, food, wine… need I say more Plus: a drive here will likely take you through the quirky, old logging town, Boonville, in the heart of the Anderson Valley wine regionβ€”basically Sonoma without the crowds. Fun fact: Boonville has its own language, Boontling.

βž› 3 things to do in Mendocino: Stop for disc golf and beers at Anderson Valley Brewery in Boonville; go kayaking on The Big River with Catch a Canoe; and hike the waterfall loop at Russian Gulch Park.

βž› Can’t miss places to eat and drink: In Boonville, get cheese and charcuterie at Pennyroyal Farms; stop for bottles of wine at Disco Ranch and Navarro Vineyards, which makes an excellent gewurztraminer. In Mendocino, eat a pizza lunch at The Brickery, dinner or brunch at Fog Eater Cafe, and enjoy a sunset meal and/or drinks at Ledford House. For a splurge, drive to Elk (motto: β€œIt’s always a good day in Elk”) for dinner at Michelin-starred Harbor House Inn, one of the best meals I’ve had in CA. Though still spendy, they also have a cheaper lunch option if you want to sample their sea-and-forest-foraged menu.

βž› Where to stay: Mendocino Grove is a beautiful glamping retreat just five minutes from Mendocino and has some availability for July 19-21 if you book direct. In town, the cute B&B, JD House is my pick and has availability July 19-21 (plus: small discount if you stay 3 nights).

βž› Packing tip: It’s the coast so bring layers, sunscreen, and a good pair of hiking shoes.

βž› Getting there: From the Bay Area, Boonville is about 2-2.5 hours north by car, and Mendocino is another 45-50 minutes west from Boonville.

WHERE TO TRAVEL THIS FALL

Alsace, France in September

Late September

I’ll never say no to a trip to Paris, but some of my favorite adventures in France have been outside the country’s most iconic (and most visited) city. One in particular was a solo weekend trip last fall to Alsace, a region which shares a borderβ€”as well as many cultural and culinary traditionsβ€”with Germany. It’s known for its white wines and many beautiful small towns (officially called Les Plus Beaux Villages de France) full of colorful Renaissance buildings. My favorite part, though? The well-developed bike paths and country roads on the Alsace Wine Route made it easy to explore the area by bike, and a visit in the fall meant less crowds and great weather. Make Strasbourg or Colmar your home base for the weekend.

βž› 3 things to do in Alsace: Rent an electric bike from self-service rental company, Le VΓ©lo Libre in Colmar, and spend a day cycling to nearby wineries and medieval towns (like Turckheim and Eguisheim, pictured above); wander Petite France in Strasbourg; visit the ChΓ’teau du Haut–Koenigsbourg.

βž› Can’t miss foods: Alsatian food is hearty (all the more reason to bike up an appetite), but don’t leave without trying regional specialties like a bretzel (basically a soft pretzel), spaetzle (I ate at La Corde Γ  Linge in Strasbourg), and having at least one meal at a winestub like Winestub Brenner in Colmar.

βž› Where to stay: I spent my solo weekend staying at Hotel Les Haras in the region’s capital, Strasbourg, which has a lovely hammam and restaurant on site. If I were to plan the trip again, I would choose to stay in Colmar. La Maison des TΓͺtes comes highly recommended.

βž› Getting there: There are direct trains daily from Paris to Strasbourg, which take 1hr 45 mins. Colmar is 2hr 30mins and you’ll need to change trains in Strasbourg. I used the app, Omio, to book and manage my train tickets and highly recommend it.
